Danish Ocean Cluster on an Inspiring Visit to Skagen
On February 25th, Danish Ocean Cluster took its members on an exciting trip to Skagen, where we explored the city’s maritime industry.
The day featured inspiring company visits to Skagen Salmon, MARTEC Skagen & Skagen Uddannelsescenter, and Skagen Havn – Port of Skagen. Participants gained insights into everything from sustainable fish production to the future of maritime education and the port’s role in the blue economy.
A big thank you to our hosts for sharing their knowledge – and to all participants for a day filled with great conversations and networking!
Over the past six months, we at Danish Ocean Cluster have been part of the Nordic Ocean Opportunity Project (NOOP), where, as the Danish partner, we have conducted a screening of the Danish market for maritime capital.
The blue sector is undergoing a major transformation, which requires capital. That is why the theme of our next member meeting/workshop is precisely capital. The program includes exciting presentations from North Denmark EU Office, MariPure, Jyske Bank, North Jutland Loan Fund, Onnest, and, of course, a presentation of the results from the NOOP project – a screening of the Danish market for maritime capital.
Save the date for an exciting Capital Day! It will take place at the North Sea Science Park in Hirtshals on March 25, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The event is free for members (up to two participants), while non-members or guests must pay a fee of 750 DKK.

Danish Ocean Cluster Launched at a Successful Event in Hirtshals
On September 25, 2025, the Danish Ocean Cluster was officially launched at a successful Kick-Off Event at the North Sea Science Park in Hirtshals. More than 40 participants contributed to the initiation of the cluster, which focuses on circular business thinking and sustainable development in the blue sector.
Thor Sigfusson, PhD, from the Iceland Ocean Cluster, attended as a guest speaker and shared inspiring examples from Iceland’s innovative blue economy. Chairman of the Board Linn Indrestrand highlighted North Atlantic business relations and upcoming projects in Hirtshals Harbor, while Secretariat Director Mette Hyldgaard Roussis spoke about the cluster’s unique role in the maritime sector.
The Danish Ocean Cluster is also participating in a Nordic project examining the need for maritime capital to support the sustainable transition of fisheries and maritime industries.
On February 25, we invite our members of Danish Ocean Cluster to an exciting and educational day in Skagen. The program includes a visit to Port of Skagen, where we will gain insight into its role as one of Denmark’s most important fishing ports. We will also visit Skagen Salmon, one of the country’s leading producers in salmon farming, as well as Skagen Training Center and MARTEC, which play key roles in education and innovation within the maritime sector.
All members have received a link for registration and further information about the event.
Danish Ocean Cluster Participates in Arctic Circle Assembly
Last week, the Danish Ocean Cluster represented Denmark at this year’s Arctic Circle Assembly. Chairman of the Board, Linn Indrestrand, participated in a debate on investment opportunities in the Arctic and the economic initiatives needed to promote a more sustainable ocean economy.
The debate was moderated by Verineia Codrean, Senior Advisor at FRONTTIER, and the panel included experts such as: • Even Ovnerud, Founding Partner at Oxidane Venture • Virginia E. Vegas, Managing Director at FRONTTIER • Fertram Sigurjonsson, President & CEO at Kerecis • Thordur Reynisson, Senior Innovation Advisor at Nordic Innovation • Linn Indrestrand, Head of Fishery and Maritime Services at Port of Hirtshals and Chairman of the Board at Danish Ocean Cluster
The debate held particular significance for the Danish Ocean Cluster, which is the Danish partner in the Nordic Ocean Opportunity Project. This initiative aims to bridge the financing gap in the Nordic ocean economy and attract private capital to sustainable solutions through research and the promotion of Nordic ocean investment opportunities.
Nordic Ocean Opportunity (NOOP) is a project aimed at closing the funding gap in the ocean economy by attracting more private capital to sustainable ocean solutions in the Nordic region. The project focuses on promoting investments in the ocean economy, which plays a critical role in ensuring the health of our planet. Specifically, the project addresses the underfunding of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water), which is essential for protecting marine resources and ecosystems.
Currently, only €21 billion of the required €147 billion needed annually to achieve the Life Below Water goals by 2030 is available globally. NOOP aims to reduce the significant funding gap of €126 billion, which makes it challenging to implement sustainable solutions in the ocean economy.
The project will highlight the strengths and opportunities within the Nordic ocean economy, including traditional industries such as fisheries and shipping, as well as innovative areas like aquaculture, ocean energy, and marine biotechnology. It will analyze the sector to quantify growth potential and identify specific investment opportunities. Furthermore, it will examine the barriers preventing investments and propose concrete solutions to overcome these challenges.
The outcome of the project will be a report expected to be published in the fall of 2024. The report will provide recommendations on how to attract private investments and include an action plan to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in the Nordic ecosystem and foster growth in the ocean economy.
The project is led by FRONTTIER in collaboration with several partners, including Danish Ocean Cluster, Port of Hirtshals, North Sea Science Park, Innovatum Science Park, and RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden).
