Fishlab
| In the changing landscape of aquaculture, the demand for sustainable and scientifically grounded practices has never been more pressing. Fishlab, a Danish company established in 2004, is facilitating this evolution by merging state-of-the-art research with practical solutions in fish fry cultivation and live feed production. With over two decades of experience, Fishlab has become a vital link between academic research and industry application, creating collaborations that drive innovation in aquaculture. Fishlab specializes in semi-extensive and intensive fish larvae production, offering comprehensive guidance on production planning, live feed cultivation, health monitoring, and disease prevention. Their expertise ensures high survival rates and robust growth in commercially cultured fish species. By integrating knowledge of water quality management, hatching strategies, and feed composition, Fishlab delivers tailored solutions that meet the specific needs of aquaculture operations. Recognizing the challenges associated with traditional live feeds like Artemia, Fishlab, in collaboration with partners, is pioneering the use of Enchytraeus albidus (white worms) as a sustainable alternative. These terrestrial worms can be mass-produced using organic by-products from industries such as brewing and coffee production, aligning with circular bioeconomy principles. Notably, feeding juvenile fish with white worms has demonstrated up to a 200% increase in growth rates, improved fish welfare and reduced mortality, marking a significant advancement in aquaculture nutrition. Fishlab’s extensive network includes collaborations with universities, consulting firms, and aquaculture companies. |

Hemi Material Biosciences
Hemi Material Biosciences is an early-stage biomaterials company working to create value from by-products from both land and sea. With a focus on sustainability, Hemi MBS develops innovative methods to extract and refine biological raw materials—particularly DNA—from waste streams in the food industry.
The company has a special focus on fish milt (sperm sacs) as well as other organic side streams from fisheries and aquaculture. Using a patentable, non-toxic, and scalable extraction technology, Hemi MBS can transform these by-products into high-value ingredients for medicine, cosmetics, and future bio-based materials.
Hemi MBS aims to establish a Scandinavian operation and collaborate closely with the fish processing industry to reduce waste and create new circular value chains. At the same time, the company is working toward a broader vision of supporting the transition from oil-based materials to bio-based alternatives derived from agricultural and food waste.
Hemi MBS’ contribution to a more circular bioeconomy:
- Utilizes valuable substances from fish and plant by-products
- Enables local, scalable processing of waste streams
- Creates new ingredients for medicine, cosmetics, and biomaterials
Hailia
Hailia Nordic is a Finnish seafood-tech company working to rethink the utilization of raw materials from fish processing. The company has developed innovative solutions that make it possible to transform sidestreams from fish filleting into new, sustainable, ready-to-eat food products of high quality.
Using advanced technology and specially developed processes, Hailia helps the seafood industry get more value from every fish. Parts that have traditionally been underutilized or considered waste can instead be turned into valuable, texturized food products with commercial potential.
In collaboration with partners, Hailia has already developed and launched eight commercial products based entirely on sidestreams from fish. These products are now available in retail, wholesale, and as ingredients in ready meals.
A key partnership with the Danish company Dana Technology enables the combination of specialized machinery, processing methods, recipes, and licensing models. This allows seafood processors to implement Hailia’s solutions directly in their own production facilities and create new product lines locally.
Hailia’s contribution to a more sustainable food system:
- Increases food yield from typically around 70% to up to 90%
- Significantly reduces food waste
- Creates opportunities for new, innovative food products

Andrea Klitbo ApS
Andrea Klitbo ApS is a family-owned fishing company with deep roots on Læsø. The business is run by Thomas Christiansen, who represents the fourth generation of a long-standing fishing family. The catch consists primarily of Norway lobster and edible fish, and all of the family’s vessels have throughout the years carried the name Klitbo—always combined with the first names of the owners’ children, which today pays tribute to Thomas’s daughter, Andrea.
Historically, the fishing has taken place around Læsø and in Kattegat, but today the company mainly operates in Skagerrak, where better fishing opportunities provide both higher volumes and greater variety. Their commitment to fishing goes hand in hand with strong involvement in the local business community. All four generations have been active in both the practical side of fishing and the political development of the industry. Today, Thomas serves as chairman of the Læsø Fishermen’s Association and works purposefully to promote innovation, sustainability, and new development opportunities for the fishing sector on Læsø.

Reef Circular
Reef Circular is a Danish company based in Copenhagen that works to restore and strengthen marine environments using artificial reefs designed to increase marine biodiversity in areas where nature has been damaged by human activity. Their reefs create surfaces and habitats for marine life such as algae, mussels, and fish, helping to promote healthy, thriving underwater ecosystems.
The company develops and produces these reefs using sustainable and circular materials, including natural clay and bio-concrete made from shells from the fishing industry, and monitors the impact with data to ensure targeted biodiversity growth. Reef Circular collaborates with researchers, local communities, and environmental organizations to protect marine environments and support long-term ocean restoration.
